P5 3L MkII Gearbox
Gearbox oil
level 4-speed gearbox
Gearbox and clutch withdrawal are lubricated as one unit, the oil level
must be checked every 3,000 miles (5.000 km) and replenished as necessary
to the 'H' mark on the dipstick.
Do not add anti-friction additives to the. gearbox oil.
Gearbox oil level
dipstick and filler cap
Both the dipstick and filler cap are accessible through the inspection
hole on top of the gearbox cover after pulling back the carpet and removing
the large front rubber plug from the cover.
Overdrive oil level
The overdrive oil level must be checked every 3,000 miles (5.000 km) and
replenished as necessary to the level mark on the dipstick.
Do not add anti-friction additives to the overdrive oil.
The dipstick and filler orifice are accessible through the inspection
hole on top of the gearbox cover after pulling back the carpet and removing
the large rear rubber plug from the cover.

Gearbox and overdrive oil changes, 4-speed gearbox
The first gearbox oil change should be made at 1,500 miles (2.400 km);
thereafter the oil must be changed every 9,000 miles (15.000km).
To change the oil, proceed as follows:
1. Absolute cleanliness is essential when draining, refilling or topping
up the gearbox and overdrive unit, as foreign matter that enters may seriously
affect the hydraulic operation of the unit.
2. Immediately after a run, when the oil is warm, drain off the oil by
removing the drain plugs in the bottom of the gearbox casing and the overdrive
casing.
3. Remove the overdrive oil filter, accessible through the drain plug
hole, and secured by a central bolt. Clean filter in petrol and refit.
4. Replace the drain plugs and refill gearbox and overdrive through their
separate fillers with the correct grade of oil.
The capacities are as follows:
Gearbox .... 3 Imperial pints (1,7 litres)
Overdrive unit .... l and 1/2 Imperial pints (0,85 litres)
5. After refilling the gearbox arid overdrive with oil, re-check the level
after the car has been run, as a certain amount of oil will be retained
in the hydraulic system.

Gearbox fluid level, Borg-Warner automatic transmission
The torque converter and automatic gearbox are lubricated as our unit.
As the fluid for operating the torque converter is fed from the transmission
casing it is essential when checking the level or topping up the automatic
gearbox that the engine is run at idling speed to transfer fluid from
transmission casing to torque converter, otherwise a false level reading
will be obtained. Do not add anti-friction additives to the Borg-Warner
fluid. The fluid level should be checked every 3,000 miles (5.000 km)
as follows
1. Absolute cleanliness is essential. Use only nylon rag for cleaning.
2. Stand car on level ground. Ensure the engine is at its normal operating
temperature.
3. Remove tunnel carpet and rubber plug to expose dipstick.
4. Clean area around dipstick hole. Remove dipstick, wipe dry and check
fluid level. The difference between fttll and low marks on dipstick represents
approximately one pint (0,5 litre).
5. With the engine idling and the selector at L, add the recommended grade
of fluid to bring the level up to the 'full' mark. Do not overfill.

Gearbox fluid changes, Borg-Warner automatic transmission
The gearbox fluid must be changed every 18,000 miles (30.000 km), as follows:
1. Absolute cleanliness is essential. Use only nylon rag for cleaning.
2. Stand car on level ground. Ensure the engine is at its normal operating
temperature.
3. Remove tunnel carpet and rubber plug to expose dipstick.
4. Clean area around dipstick hole and remove dipstick.
5. Remove the drain plug from the left-hand front of the transn-ussion
fluid sump. Take great care if the car has lust returned from a run as
the fluid may be hot enough to cause scalding.
6. The torque converter housing cover plate should be removed and the
torque converter rota-
ted until the drain plug is at the bottom. Remove drain plug. Again take
care to avoid
scalding.
Converter drain plug
7. To facilitate draining remove the square-headed converter pressure
take-off plug, located at the bottom of the reverse servo housing.
8. Allow fluid to drain away completely from both transmission casing
and torque converter. Replace drain plugs, converter pressure take-off
plug and torque converter housing cover plate.
Tighten torque converter drain plug to 15-20 lb./ft. (2,07-2,76 mkg),
sump drain plug to 35-45 lb./ft. (4,83-6,22 mkg) and pressure take-off
plug to 6-7 lb,/ft. (0,83-0,96 mkg).
9. Pour 10 pints (5,7 litres) of the recommended grade of fluid into the
transmission through the dipstick hole.

plug
10. Start the engine, set the selector lever at L, and allow engine to
idle for approximately one minute to transfer fluid from transmission
case to torque coverter unit.
11. With the engine still idling and the selector still at L, add additional
fluid, up to 5 pints (3 litres), to bring the level up to the full mark
on the dipstick. Do not overfill and never use anything but the recommended
fluid.
12. The total capacity is approximately 15 pints (8.5 litres).
13. Replace dipstick, rubber plug and gearbox cover carpet.
