Routine
maintenance
On the following pages, in the same general order as listed in the Maintenance
Section of this book, will be found full instructions on how to carry
out the maintenance and adjustments required on your Rover 2000.
Absolute cleanliness is essential when carrying out maintenance.
Engine oil level,
all models-Every 750 miles (1.000 km)
Proceed as follows:
Stand the car on level ground and allow the oil to drain back into the
sump. Withdraw the dipstick, wipe it clean, re-insert to its full depth
and remove a second time to take the reading. Add oil as necessary; never
fill above the H mark.
Engine oil changes
and filter replacement, all models-Every 5,000 miles (8.000 km) or every
four months, whichever comes first. To change the engine oil:
Run the engine to warm up the oil, switch off the ignition. Remove the
drain plug in the right-hand side of the sum p. Allow oil to drain away
completely and replace the plug.
To drain oil cooler, TC models only:
When the engine oil on TC models is changed the oil cooler must also be
drained as follows:
1. Remove the drain plug which is located in the bottom of engine coolant
radiator at the right-hand side.
2. Allow oil to drain away completely and then replace the plug.

clockwise by hand; do not overtighten.
Refill with oil of the correct grade through the filler at the right-hand
front of the engine; the capacity is 9 Imperial pints, 1O.5 U.S. pints
(5,0 litres). This includes 1 Imperial pint, 1.2 U.S. pints (0,5 litre)
for the filter.
Run engine and check
for oil leaks at filter and drain plug(s).
Use only the recommended
oil filter AC No. 7965022, type SC.

Carburetter
slow-running adjustment, SC and automatic models-Every 5,000 miles (8.000
km)
The only adjustments provided at the carburetter are a jet adjustment nut
and a throttle adjusting screw.
Should the carburetter require adjustment for any reason, proceed as follows:
1. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is obtained. If necessary
adjust the throttle adjusting screw to give the correct idling speed.
2. Turn the jet adjusting nut up to weaken, down to enrich, until the fastest
idling speed is obtained consistent with even firing.
3. As the mixture is adjusted the engine will probably run faster and it
may be necessary to unscrew the throttle adjusting screw a little in order
to reduce the speed.
4. Lift the carburetter piston approximately 0.03125 in. (1 mm) by means
of the lift pin situated on the left of the carburetter body. There is approximately
0.1875 in. (4,5 mm) free movement of the lift pin before it contacts the
piston.
If the engine speeds up immediately the mixture is too rich and the jet
adjustment nut must be screwed in, thus weakening the mixture; if the engine
stops immediately the mixture is too weak and the jet adjustment nut should
be screwed out to enrich the mixture.
If the engine speed momentarily increases very slightly, the mixture is
correct.
Finally adjust the throttle adjusting screw to get a smooth idling speed.
The fast idle cam screw should not require adjustment. |

Carburetter slow-running
adjustment, TC models-Every 5,000 miles (8.000 km)
Carburetter adjustment should be carried out by a Rover Distributor or
Dealer as special equipment is required.
The only adjustments provided at the carburetters are a mixture adjustment
screw and a throttle adjusting screw.
Should the carburetters require adjustment for any reason, proceed as
follows:
1. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is obtained. If necessary
adjust the slow-run screw to give the correct idling speed. The screw
on each carburetter should be moved an equal amount.
2. Using an approved carburetter throttle balancing device, turn the throttle
adjusting screws until an identical reading is obtained on both carburetters.
3. When satisfactory throttle synchronisation has been obtained the mixture
should be adjusted by screwing both mixture adjusting screws up or down
by the same amount until the fastest idling speed is obtained consistent
with even firing.
4. As the mixture is adjusted the engine will probably run faster arid
it will be necessary therefore to re-adjust the idling speed by means
of the throttle adjusting screws, an equal amount must be given to each
screw, otherwise sychronisation will be impaired.
5. Lift the front carburetter piston approximately 0.03125- in. (1 mm)
by means of the lift pin situated on the right of the carburetter body.
There is approximately 0.1875 in. (4,5 mm) free movement of the lift pin
before it contacts the piston.
6. If the engine speeds up immediately the mixture is too rich and the
mixture adjustment screw must be turned anti-clockwise, thus weakening
the mixture; if the engine speed decreases immediately the mixture is
too weak and the mixture adjustment screw should be turned clockwise to
enrich the mixture.
If the engine speed momentarily increases very slightly the
adjustment is correct.
7. Repeat items 1 to 6 on the rear carburetter.
8. Re-check the front carburetter, as the two carburetters are interdependent.
The fast-idle screws
should not require adjustment.
Carburetter hydraulic
damper, all models-Every 5,000 miles (8.000 km)
Unscrew the cap on top of the suction chamber, withdraw cap and hydraulic
damper, replenish the damper reservoir as necessary with SAE 20 oil to
within about in. (12 mm) from the top of the tube.
Then replace cap and
hydraulic damper. This applies to both carburetters on twin carburetter
models.
